Expert Guide by a Kashmir-based Local Explorer

VERINAG

"The Majestic Source of River Jhelum"

In Kashmiri, "Naag" means "spring". Verinag is arguably the most historically significant spring in South Kashmir. Situated at the foothills of the Pir Panjal range, approximately 20 KM from Anantnag (Islamabad), it serves as the majestic starting point of the River Jhelum.

1. The Mughal Legacy

Verinag Spring Entrance Pathway

The octagonal stone basin and the surrounding arched gallery were commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1620 A.D. Jahangir was so captivated by the deep blue water that he requested to be buried here. Later, his son, Shah Jahan, enhanced the site's beauty by laying out a classical Persian-style garden.

🏛️ Heritage Status

Today, the spring and its surrounding arcade are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a Monument of National Importance.

2. The Sacred Blue Waters

The spring is famous for its distinct deep blue color and incredible depth. The water remains at a constant temperature and level throughout the year, it never dries up in summer and never overflows during the monsoon, a true geological marvel.
