NISHAT BAGH
"Faiz Baksh: The Garden of Joyous Vistas"
Perched on the eastern bank of Dal Lake, Nishat Bagh is the second-largest Mughal garden in the Kashmir Valley. Built in 1633 by Asif Khan (the brother of Empress Nur Jahan), this garden is famously known as the "Garden of Gladness." Unlike the secluded Shalimar, Nishat is designed to be open, offering a breathtaking perspective of the lake and the distant mountains.
1. The 12 Terraces: A Journey through the Zodiac
Nishat Bagh is architecturally distinct due to its 12 steep terraces. Each terrace represents one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac, symbolizing a celestial journey. As you climb from the lakefront toward the mountain base, the view of the valley becomes increasingly spectacular.
🌅 The Panoramic Vistas
From the top terrace, the view includes the Dal Lake in the foreground, the Hari Parbat Fort to the west, and the snow-capped Pir Panjal range in the distance. It is arguably the best sunset spot in Kashmir.
⚔️ The Royal Rivalry
Legend has it that Emperor Shah Jahan was so impressed by Nishat's beauty that he hoped his father-in-law, Asif Khan, would gift it to him. When the gift wasn't offered, the Emperor briefly cut off the garden's water supply in a fit of jealousy!
2. Traveler's Guide to Nishat Bagh
Nishat is a favorite for local Kashmiri families and tourists alike. To truly appreciate the garden, one must walk along the central water channel and observe the Gopshira (the carved stone patterns) that create music as the water flows over them.
