Chatpal The Ultimate Hidden Paradise of South Kashmir

Field Guide by a Kashmir-based Local Explorer

CHATPAL

A peaceful hill village in south Kashmir's Shangus region, where the forests speak louder than the crowds

Landscape view of Chatpal in Anantnag district, South Kashmir
I clicked this photo in late May when the meadows were at their greenest. We spent the whole afternoon there without seeing another tourist.

I first visited Chatpal three years ago after a friend from Anantnag kept insisting I see it for myself. He described it as “what Pahalgam used to feel like decades ago,” and honestly, he was right. Chatpal is not a commercial tourist town. You will not find souvenir shops, crowded markets, or pony rides here. Instead, you get a quiet village hidden among dense forests in south Kashmir, where the sound of flowing water and grazing buffalo replaces the noise of traffic and tourists.

📍 Quick Facts (Based on My April 2026 Visit)

🗺️ District: Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir

🏞️ Area: Shangus / Chitergul side access. The turnoff comes near a small junction called Larnoo Morh

🚗 Distance from Srinagar: Around 85 km via Anantnag. The final 22 km are slow and winding.

⏱️ Drive Time: Usually 3 to 3.5 hours from Srinagar in good weather. Rain can slow the final stretch considerably.

📶 Connectivity: Jio and BSNL postpaid work occasionally near the village. Airtel usually stops working several kilometres before Chatpal.

🏠 Stay Option: JKTDC Tourist Bungalow. It's basic but clean, and the caretaker can prepare simple meals if informed in advance.

1. What Chatpal Actually Feels Like

I’ve now been to Chatpal four different times, in both summer and autumn, and every visit leaves me with the same feeling: it feels untouched. Not abandoned, just beautifully overlooked by mainstream tourism.

The village itself is small, with a few tin-roofed homes and a mosque sitting against thick deodar and pine forests. In the middle lies a wide meadow that changes character with the seasons. In May it fills with buttercups and clover, while by July the grass grows tall and lush. A small wooden bridge crosses the stream nearby, and its soft creaking somehow adds to the charm of the place.

This is not a destination for travellers looking for packed itineraries or constant activity. It suits people who enjoy sitting beside a stream with a cup of kahwa and simply watching the mountains change colour with the evening light. If silence relaxes you, Chatpal will stay with you long after you leave.

2. The Route: A Practical Drive Guide

From Srinagar, follow the Srinagar-Jammu highway toward Anantnag. After crossing Khanabal bridge near the railway station, continue east along the road running beside the Lidder River. The route passes through Anantnag town and into the Shangus area.

The important turn comes at Larnoo Morh. It’s easy to miss, so keep Google Maps open before mobile signals begin dropping near Shangus. After the turn, the road becomes much narrower. The first section is paved but uneven, while the final stretch includes gravel patches, dirt sections, and a few small water crossings. A regular car can usually manage the drive during dry weather if taken slowly.

🚖 From Srinagar: My Recommendation

I would avoid doing Chatpal as a rushed same-day trip. I tried it once and spent more time driving than relaxing. Staying overnight makes the experience far more enjoyable. A private cab from Srinagar generally costs between ₹4,500 and ₹5,500 depending on the season. It helps if your driver already knows the route.

🚗 From Anantnag: The Easier Option

If you’re already staying in Anantnag or Pahalgam, the journey becomes much simpler. From Anantnag town, Chatpal is roughly 40 km away and takes a little over an hour. Local Sumo taxis are available and the drivers know these roads extremely well.

3. Where to Stay

The JKTDC Tourist Bungalow is currently the only proper accommodation option in Chatpal. It’s simple and functional rather than luxurious. The rooms have basic furniture, attached bathrooms, and running water, though hot water depends on the solar system working properly.

The caretaker keeps the property clean and can arrange home-style meals if informed early in the day. Expect simple food like rice, dal, and local vegetables. There are no cafes, restaurants, or proper shops nearby, so carrying snacks and essentials is important.

🏠 Booking the JKTDC Bungalow

The bungalow usually does not appear on hotel booking websites. I’ve always booked it directly through the JKTDC office in Srinagar by phone or in person. During peak summer weekends, rooms fill up quickly, so booking several days ahead is a good idea.

4. Best Time to Visit

  • ☀️ Summer (May to September): This is the ideal season. Meadows stay green, streams remain full, and temperatures are comfortable during the day.
  • 🍂 Autumn (October to early November): The forests turn beautiful shades of green and gold, and the atmosphere becomes quieter and colder.
  • ❄️ Winter and Early Spring (November to April): Snow and slush can make the road difficult. Unless you are experienced with mountain driving, this season is best avoided.

5. Things to Do

Chatpal is less about sightseeing and more about slowing down. There are no ticket counters, commercial attractions, or tourist activities. The beauty lies in simply spending time outdoors.

🥾 Forest Walks

A trail from the meadow climbs gradually into the deodar forest. The walk is easy, scenic, and doesn’t require a guide if you stay aware of your surroundings.

☕ Quiet Mornings by the Stream

The stream beside the meadow is cold, clear, and peaceful throughout summer. There’s a flat rock beside the water that became my favourite place to sit with tea in the mornings.

Photography lovers will enjoy the misty mornings, grazing livestock, forest light, and quiet village atmosphere. There’s also a small waterfall about 25 minutes upstream from the bungalow if you feel like exploring further.

6. Safety and Connectivity

Chatpal feels remote enough that you should prepare properly before arriving. Mobile networks become unreliable several kilometres before the village, so assume you’ll mostly be offline.

The road can become slippery after rain, especially around a few steep bends closer to the village. I personally avoid driving there after dark because there are no streetlights once you leave Shangus.

🧭 Essentials to Carry

  • Best season: May to mid-October
  • Transport: Private taxi recommended
  • Stay: JKTDC Tourist Bungalow
  • Carry: Warm clothes, rain protection, snacks, cash, water, and a power bank

7. Common Questions

Is Chatpal worth visiting from Srinagar?

If you expect a busy tourist destination with cafes and shopping, probably not. But if you enjoy peaceful landscapes and quieter corners of Kashmir, it’s absolutely worth the drive.

Can it be done as a day trip?

Technically yes, but staying overnight gives you a much better experience and lets you enjoy the calm atmosphere properly.

What about food?

There are no restaurants or food stalls in Chatpal. Carry snacks and essentials, and arrange meals with the bungalow caretaker in advance.

Is it suitable for families?

Families comfortable with road trips and simple facilities should have no issues. The meadow is open and safe for children, though the area is quite remote.

8. Exploring More of South Kashmir

Chatpal pairs beautifully with destinations like Pahalgam, Achabal, and Doodhpathri. Spending a few days exploring this side of Kashmir gives a much calmer and more authentic experience than sticking only to the usual tourist circuit.
