Kongwattan Meadow: Kulgam's Untouched Alpine Paradise

KONGWATTAN MEADOW

"The Silent Paradise of Kulgam"

Kongwattan Meadow untouched alpine paradise

Before you conquer the mighty peaks of the Pir Panjal, the mountains grant you a resting place of unimaginable beauty. Kongwattan (or Kungwattan) is a sprawling, lush green alpine meadow situated roughly halfway between Aharbal and Kounsarnag. Surrounded entirely by a thick canopy of old-growth fir and pine forests, it is arguably one of the most serene camping spots in all of South Kashmir.

The Ultimate Basecamp

Because the trek to Kounsarnag is grueling, nearly all trekkers use Kongwattan as their primary basecamp. Reaching the meadow involves a beautiful 8-kilometer hike from Aharbal, walking parallel to the roaring Veshu River.

As you step out of the dense forest, the landscape suddenly bursts open into this massive, flat green valley. The only structures here are the seasonal Kothas (wooden and mud huts) built by the nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes who bring their sheep here to graze during the summer.

River Veshu

The ice-cold Veshu River cuts directly past the meadow, providing a pristine, crystal-clear water source for campers and a soothing soundtrack for the night.

Digital Detox

Leave your screens behind. Kongwattan has zero mobile network coverage, zero electricity, and zero light pollution, making it a stargazer's absolute dream.
