Nestled on a hillock approximately 100 meters above the main road to Pahalgam, the Ashmuqam Dargah is a striking visual and spiritual landmark. It is the resting place of the highly revered 15th-century Sufi saint, Baba Zain-ud-Din Wali. Unlike typical mausoleums built on flat ground, this remarkable shrine is constructed directly into the face of a mountain, hiding a deep, ancient cave within its wooden walls.

1. The Prince Who Became a Saint
The story of Baba Zain-ud-Din Wali is the stuff of cinematic legends. Born as Zia Singh, a young Hindu prince in the Kishtwar region, he suffered from a severe, incurable illness. When the great Kashmiri saint Nund Rishi (Sheikh Noor-ud-din) passed through Kishtwar, the prince's mother begged him to heal her son. Following a miraculous recovery, Zia Singh traveled to Kashmir, embraced the Rishi order of Sufism, and was renamed Zain-ud-Din.
🐍 The Legend of the Cave
Legend has it that Nund Rishi instructed his new disciple to meditate in a specific cave in Ashmuqam. Upon arriving, Zain-ud-Din found the cave infested with venomous snakes, cobras, and scorpions. Using a wooden club gifted by his master, the saint miraculously cleared the cave and spent years meditating inside its dark depths. Today, the inner sanctum of the shrine is this very cave.
2. A Symbol of Interfaith Harmony
Ashmuqam is a shining beacon of Kashmir's syncretic culture. The saint is deeply revered by both Muslims and Hindus. For centuries, the shrine has served as a spiritual gateway for pilgrims undertaking the grueling Amarnath Yatra. It is a long-standing tradition for Hindu pilgrims to stop at Ashmuqam to seek the Baba's blessings for a safe journey before proceeding into the high mountains.
🔥 The Zool Festival
Every April, the town celebrates the saint's Urs (anniversary) with a spectacular event known as the Zool Festival. Devotees march up the hill carrying burning wooden torches (Mashals), illuminating the entire mountain in a breathtaking display of devotion.

If the shrine's grand wooden architecture and steep steps look familiar, it is because it served as the stunning backdrop for the famous Qawwali song "Bhar Do Jholi Meri" from the blockbuster Bollywood movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan!
3. What to Expect During Your Visit
As you climb the stone steps, the view of the lush Lidder Valley below becomes increasingly spectacular. Inside the cool, dimly lit cavern, the air is thick with the scent of incense. You will see visitors tying colorful threads to the wooden lattice work, each knot representing a deeply personal prayer or wish entrusted to the saint.
