Located just 22 KM from Srinagar, Dachigam National Park literally translates to "Ten Villages," named in memory of the ten villages that were relocated to create this protected area in 1910. Once the private hunting preserve of the Maharaja, it is now the most important wildlife sanctuary in Kashmir.

🦌 The Hangul: A Living Legend

Dachigam is the last home of the critically endangered Hangul (Kashmiri Stag), a cousin of the European Red Deer. With its magnificent antlers and shy nature, spotting a Hangul in the wild is a rare and spiritual experience for any nature lover.

1. Wildlife & Biodiversity

The park is divided into Upper and Lower Dachigam. The terrain ranges from deep coniferous forests and rocky cliffs to alpine pastures. Beyond the Hangul, keep your eyes peeled for:

🐻 Himalayan Black Bear

Often seen in the lower reaches during the late summer and autumn fruit-ripening season.

🐆 Leopards

The elusive apex predators of the park that predominantly roam the higher, rocky outcrops.

🦅 Golden Eagles

Along with over 145 species of birds, making the park an absolute Ornithologist's Paradise.

🛡️ Planning Your Safari:

🎟️ Entry Permits: You need a special entry permit from the Wildlife Department. It's best to apply online or at the office in Srinagar a day in advance.

☀️ Best Time: April to October for Lower Dachigam; summer months for trekking into the Upper reaches.

🚶 Travel Tip: No private vehicles are allowed inside. You can explore on foot or use the department-provided eco-vans.
