♥ Expert Guide by a Kashmir-based Local Explorer
Traveler's Essentials
"Everything You Need to Know Before You Land"
Traveling to Kashmir is an experience of a lifetime, but it requires a bit more planning than your average vacation. From unique telecommunication rules to unpredictable mountain weather, here is your essential toolkit for a smooth journey.
⚠️ The SIM Card Rule (Important!)
This is the most common surprise for tourists: Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir DO NOT work in the valley.
- Postpaid is King: Only Postpaid SIMs from other states (Airtel, Jio, BSNL) work here.
- Local SIM: If you only have a prepaid card, you must buy a local Kashmiri SIM upon arrival. You will need your [Aadhaar Redacted] and a passport-sized photo.
- Data: 4G/5G is widely available in Srinagar, but signals can be weak in remote meadows like Sonamarg.
1. Seasonal Packing List
The weather in the mountains can change in minutes. Here is how to pack:
☀️ Summer (May - August)
Light cottons for the day, but always carry a light jacket or sweater for the chilly evenings.
❄️ Winter (Nov - March)
Heavy woolens, thermal inner-wear, waterproof boots, and high-quality puffer jackets.
2. Permits & Security
While most tourist spots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are open to all, some border areas require an Inner Line Permit (ILP), especially if you plan to visit Gurez Valley or certain parts of Kupwara.
🛂 Always Carry ID
Keep your original ID ([Aadhaar Redacted]/Passport) and several photocopies with you at all times for security checkpoints.
💡 Final Pro-Tips
- 💰 Cash: While UPI is growing, carry enough cash. ATMs can be scarce in rural areas.
- 💊 Medicine: Carry basic meds for motion sickness and cold, as mountain roads can be winding.
- 🚗 Transport: Use registered tourist taxis. Agree on the fare beforehand or check the government rate list.
