GUREZ VALLEY
"The Untouched Frontier of the North"
Tucked away in the high Himalayas of the Bandipora district, just miles from the Line of Control, lies Gurez Valley. For decades, this pristine valley remained off-limits to travelers. Today, it has opened its doors, revealing a landscape of rugged mountains, traditional wooden log villages, and the brilliant turquoise waters of the Kishenganga River.
The Legend of Habba Khatoon
Dominating the Dawar township is a massive, pyramid-shaped limestone mountain named after Habba Khatoon, the famous 16th-century Kashmiri poetess and peasant queen. Legend says she wandered near this peak, singing songs of grief after her husband, King Yousuf Shah Chak, was exiled by Emperor Akbar. The sunset glow on this peak is mesmerising.
A Different World: The Shina Culture
Gurez feels distinct from the rest of Kashmir. The indigenous people here are the Dards, and they speak Shina, a language entirely different from Kashmiri. Their traditional, interlocking log houses are built to withstand 10-foot winter snows without using a single iron nail.
📍 Essential Planning Tips
Permits: Always carry your original Aadhaar Card/Passport. You will need to register at multiple army checkpoints along the route.
Best Time: June to September. The valley is completely cut off by heavy snow for six months of the year.
Connectivity: Only Postpaid Jio and BSNL networks work in Dawar (the main town of Gurez). Expect zero connectivity in the upper villages.
