KOKERNAG
"The Sin-Cleansing Springs of the Golden Crown"
"Kokernag Breng chu sunsund preng,
Kuni ne kahn tsunz akis nish."
— Sheikh-ul-Alam (Nund Rishi)
(Translation: Kokernag in Breng Valley is a golden crown; its beauty and purity are unmatched.)
Nestled in the breathtaking Breng Valley at an altitude of 2,012 meters, Kokernag is home to the largest freshwater spring in Kashmir. Known locally as Papashudan Nad (the sin-cleansing spring), its waters are legendary for their digestive and healing properties—a fact even recorded by Abul Fazl in the ancient Mughal chronicles of Ain-i-Akbari.
🐔 Why "Kokernag"?
The name is an amalgam of two Kashmiri words: Koker (Chicken) and Nag (Spring). According to local lore, the main spring gushes out from the base of a forested hill in a pattern that perfectly resembles the claws of a hen. Others believe a saint's miracle transformed a serpent into a cock that dug the soil to let the water gush forth!
The Botanical Bliss
Spread over 300 kanals, the Kokernag Botanical Garden is a vibrant tapestry of over 100,000 plant species. Unlike the formal Mughal gardens, this park feels more wild and lush.
The garden is split into terraces, with crystal-clear streams crisscrossing through the lawns under the shade of ancient, towering Chinar trees.
