Perched high above Dal Lake on the Zabarwan Mountain range, Pari Mahal (The Palace of Fairies) is a seven-terraced garden that looks like something out of a storybook. Unlike the other famous Mughal gardens in Kashmir, Pari Mahal does not feature cascading water fountains. Instead, it is defined by its weathered stone arches, quiet symmetry, and a contemplative atmosphere.

From its highest terrace, the sweeping vista of Dal Lake, Srinagar city, and the surrounding mountains creates a stark contrast between the quiet isolation of the monument and the bustling life below. As the light shifts throughout the day, the stone walls change tone, reinforcing the sense that the place exists somewhere between history and myth.

1. A Center of Wisdom & Astronomy

Originally built in the mid-1600s by Prince Dara Shikoh (the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan), Pari Mahal was much more than a royal retreat. Built upon the ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery, the Prince converted the site into an observatory and a school of astrology.

Dara Shikoh, known as a great scholar and patron of the arts, used this quiet sanctuary to translate sacred texts, study the stars, and explore Sufism. Today, Pari Mahal stands as a reminder of a period when architecture, science, and spirituality were deeply intertwined.
