Martand Sun Temple: The Golden Ruins of Anantnag

MARTAND SUN TEMPLE

"Kashmir’s Colossal Stone Poetry"

Standing atop a plateau with a commanding view of the entire Kashmir Valley, the Martand Sun Temple is a testament to the grand vision of King Lalitaditya Muktapida. Built in the 8th century, it was dedicated to Surya (the Sun God) and remains one of the most magnificent examples of Kasmiri temple architecture ever conceived.

A Fusion of Styles

The temple is famous for blending Gandharan, Gupta, and Greek architectural styles. The massive courtyard is surrounded by 84 smaller shrines, and the central structure, though in ruins, still exudes a sense of royal power and spiritual mystery.

The Mattan Spring

Just a few kilometers down from the temple ruins lies the Mattan Temple, famous for its sacred fish-filled spring. Pilgrims and tourists alike visit this holy site to offer prayers and watch the large schools of fish swimming in the crystal-clear mountain water.

The Mattan Sacred Spring

🎬 Cinematic Fame: You might recognize these ruins from several Bollywood films, most notably the "Bismil" song from Haider.
🌄 Sunset Views: The plateau offers one of the best spots in South Kashmir to photograph the sun setting over the Pir Panjal range.
